Secret Songs, insert front

Rechelle Malin is a folk singer, songwriter, author, blogger, mother, the wife of a country doctor, and most recently, a horticulturist. Her writing and lyrics are clever, humorous and deeply personal. So, you can imagine my excitement when I was asked to design the artwork for her newest album, Secret Songs!

This is a brand new poster for the upcoming KU Dance Company concert on April 17 and 18, 2008. The performances are part of the celebration of KU alumna and professor of dance Elizabeth Sherbon in conjunction with Murphy Hall’s 50th Anniversary. It should be a wonderful concert! Visit the Murphy 50th website for more information on Elizabeth Sherbon and all of the 50th Anniversary events.

Studio Visit: Justin Marable

Wednesday, February 13th, 2008

Justin Marable is a printmaker who works out of his studio which is located in a historic and charming neighborhood in Topeka, KS. His works are primarily silk screens that explore the element of rural decay occurring in the heartlands of America. However, this isn’t to imply that the works are unattractive in any way. In fact, the colors and compositions of his works are rich and beautiful and most everyone who is from the area connects to the imagery and colors of the Midwest. He has huge body of work and is clearly passionate about what he does.

From his artist’s statement:

The history of a place, as well as its land and inhabitants, are all vitally important in defining a community’s environmental and social conditions. In my prints I romanticize this idea with the use of rural landscape and landmarks. These rural devices serve to emphasize the ever-growing abandonment of small towns and farmland of the Midwest. With the medium of serigraphy, or screen printing, I can express the man-made qualities of rural architecture with a photographic stencil technique.

Justin is also a super nice guy and was recently kind enough to invite me over to take a look at his studio and talk about his work and his process.

2008 Merc tshirt

Tuesday, February 12th, 2008

Just picked up the 2008 t-shirt from the The Community Mercantile, a natural food grocer (and source for all things vegan and healthy) in Lawrence, KS. It’s available in a variety of colors and sizes, so go pick one up! This cool, hand-drawn image was done by Lawrence graphic designer Melissa Meyer. Melissa not only does wonderful graphic design, but also web design and beautiful textile designs. I’ve had the pleasure of working with Melissa on several occasions and she is an extremely creative and talented artist and designer!

2008 Kansas Democratic Caucuses

Tuesday, February 5th, 2008

This isn’t a very design-oriented post, but the 2008 Kansas Democratic caucuses took place tonight and it was a very interesting experience. These photos are from the caucus at the National Guard’s Metcalf Memorial Armory. It seemed that the turnout was much larger than expected and it was really exciting to see so many people showing up to pledge their support.
